Arkitekt MNALNeighbourhood house
Ghent, Belgium
Master course: The Gathering / KU Leuven, autumn 2021
The city municipality of Ghent in Belgium is engaged in a comprehensive urban development strategy. Among other initiatives, vacant industrial buildings are repurposed to create meeting points within densely populated areas. This project centres around the remains of a former laundry complex constructed in 1953, currently standing vacant. The project proposes converting the underused building into a neighbourhood house and a generous ”third space” as part of this strategy.
The proposal was developed using Leporello as a process tool and can be unfolded to 56 pages. The project demonstrates how strategic interventions within the building's concrete structure can facilitate social activities and highlight and reveal architectural qualities previously hidden.
Supervised by Tomas Ooms and Robin Schaeverbeke.
